`Simple Sampling' part 2...
The Realtime Effects Generator v2.0
TREG v2.0 is ©1993 KBE Software. It is available as part of the sound
sampling package SuperSound widely available as Licenseware. The TREG
program itself is totally freely distributable and can be found on No
Sampler? Utilities Volume 3 (Out now : buy your copy today!)
SuperSound v3 is on No Sampler? Utilities Volume 3. Version 4.6 (the
latest version) is available from all CLR delaers.
Article by Michael Richmond
So, you want to add effects to your samples in real time? The reason?
Perhaps you don't have enough effects in OctaMED itself or in your own
sampling package. Maybe you want to play Kylie Minogue records through your
sampler and doctor them so it sounds as if she can sing. Either way, TREG
is a lot of fun and you will discover many of its features in this article.
Setting up your tape deck to record the sounds you make
TREG only adds effects, like an effects box (costing a lot more than free!)
so you cannot save samples from it. I suggest you use a similar setup to
the one below (this is mine) to record any samples you make. Then you can
re-record the samples with your own sampling package from the second tape
deck.
--------------- -------- ---------------
| Tape Deck 1 |-->--| TREG |-->--| Tape Deck 2 |
--------------- -------- ---------------
PLAY --> EFFECTS --> RECORD -->
Simply press record on deck 2, set up TREG with the effect then play the
first tape (CD, record or whatever) until the sound has been recorded. Now
the tape in deck 2 can be sampled in the usual method.
To use TREG, you need a sound sampler plugged in the parallel port. Make
sure everything is connected up properly (see last issue's article for more
details on setting up your sampler) then load up TREG.
The Main Screen
The first thing you see when loading up TREG is the main screen. In fact,
to be honest, it is the only screen. But main screen sounds nice and main
screen is what it shall be called. The screen is split up into three
sections. The top section has the four sliders in it, and a title bar.
The middle section has two large boxes surrounded by sliders, and a bank of
buttons. This section looks very much like OctMED's sample-list and it
functions in a similar way.
The bottom section (PAL users only) just contains the program's name and
the programmer (David O`Reilly)'s name.
TOP SECTION:
The purpose of the sliders depends on which effect you are using. The title
bar contains four buttons. The one on the left is the quit button. The 1st
two on the right are for the About section and to Iconify the program. If
you have never heard of iconifying before, it closes the TREG screen and
opens a small window on your workbench screen. Close the window to return
to TREG. This isn't necessary because you cannot flick between TREG and
Workbench like with most other serious programs by clicking on the top right
hand gadget. What you can't do is drah down the screen. This non-standard
interface is TREG's main problem, but cannot be avoided - it is due to the
limitations of AMOS.
MIDDLE SECTION:
Between the top and middle sections is a thin bar with just three buttons.
The purpose of these is to choose the audio channels TREG uses for its
effects: [L]eft, [Right] or [S]tereo (all channels). Below these are two
big boxes like those in OctaMED's SLIST screen (or window if you have
OctaMED v5). You must choose audio channels before pressing the [GO!]
button. I recommend using left or right as Stereo only works for the listen
effect (and that is just to check what the sound really sounds like!).
The two large boxes are the main part of TREG. The left hand one contains
the names of all the effects TREG can handle. Click on one to load this
effect `style'. You can use the sliders to move around this list. When you
click on the box, the four sliders at the top of the screen are used. Not
all are used in every effect. The unused ones remain title-less and have a
handle that fills all the slider. Clicking inside these sliders or dragging
them changes the value of whatever they are labelled - towards the left
means a low value. Towards the right is the highest value. This is for
defining your own effects. Just change them and click on the [GO!] button
to blank the screen and start your effect going. Now is the time to set
your sound source playing. The volume will need to be tweaked so it sounds
at its best. Press the left mouse button to return to the main TREG screen.
If you like, you can use a preset effect. These are listed in the right
hand box when you load an effect. Not all effects have presets. Just click
on the name and the sliders will be automatically set up.
The button marked [DEFAULT] resets all the sliders to their initial values
(in case you make a mistake). The [FILTER] button toggles the Amiga's audio
filter on and off.
The three buttons at the bottom of the section are for creating or deleting
preeset effects. There is not much room on the No Sampler? 3 disk so you
might find it helpful to format a new disk called EFFECTS: and copy the
effects drwaer onto this disk. Now you will have a full disk for your own
effects. In the [SETDIR] window delete the NoSampler: and type the words
EFFECTS:effects
1) Making your own effects
Set up the sliders in the usual way, then click on the button marked
[CREATE]. Enter a new title for the effect then hit Return. The effect
will be be saved to disk and will come up as a preset for that effect from
now on.
2) Renaming an existing effect
Click on the effect you want to rename (hence loading it in) then click on
the button marked [RENAME]. Enter the effect's new name and hit return.
3) Deleting an effect
Click on the effect then on [DELETE]. Be careful with this feature because
you can't get back an effect you have deleted.
